Summer Term Technical Requirements

Computer

The minimum operating systems for Blackboard are:

• Mac – OSX 10.8 or higher
• PC – Windows 7 or higher

The recommended operating systems for Blackboard are:

• Mac – OS 10.12
• PC – Windows 10

Internet Connectivity

You will be expected to logon to Blackboard frequently (daily), so a reliable, high-speed internet connection is essential.

• Minimum Connectivity:
  Broadband (high-speed) Internet connection with a consistent minimum speed of 1.5 Mbps.
• Recommend Connectivity:
  Broadband (high-speed) Internet connection with a speed of 4 Mbps or higher

Web Browsers

Any current browser (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Edge) should work with Blackboard. If you have difficulties with operating Blackboard, try changing browsers before seeking technical support.

Software

You will need the ability to create text documents, spreadsheets, and slides. We recommend that you use MS Office. JHU provides free access to Office 365 (free for holders of a JHED Login ID). Google Documents and Open Office are good second choices.

Java is required to use Blackboard. Visit the Blackboard Java Support page for troubleshooting.

Flash may be required to view videos. Visit the Blackboard Flash Support page for troubleshooting.

Course-Specific Software

Instructors will try to keep additional, course-specific software to a minimum, although it is sometimes unavoidable. Expectations for additional software or plugins will be communicated on the course syllabus.
